Burnt Marshmallows Taste Good

Yvonne Chouteau (March 7, 1929) – Yvonne Chouteau is one of many Native American ballerinas from the Oklahoma area. She is a member of the Shawnee Tribe and is of French ancestry. Her great great great grandfather is Jean Pierre Chouteau who established a European settlement in Oklahoma. She studied ballet at the School of American Ballet in New York before joining Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She was only 14 at the time and one of the youngest to ever be accepted. At the age of 18 she was inducted into Oklahoma’s hall fame. In 1956 she married fellow dancer Miguel Terekhov. They helped create the Oklahoma City Civic Ballet now called the Oklahoma City Ballet. In 1962, they created the first accredited dance department in the U.S. at the University of Oklahoma.
